This 1 600-kilometre meander is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo; trundle through the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic winelands of the Cape. Journey’s end is Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. Highlights of the north- and southbound routes include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein; this authentic perfectly preserved Victorian Village – founded by Mr Logan as a refreshment stop in 1890 – also boasts an impressive museum on the platform. Another stop is made in Kimberley providing an opportunity to enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Diamond Mine Museum and the world’s largest man-made excavation, the Big Hole.
The Pullman Cabin (±7 sq metres/±76 sq feet) are equipped with a comfortable sofa-seat during the day with a conversion to double or twin beds for the evening, and also have an en-suite bathroom with shower. The wood-panelled rebuilt sleeper coaches, remodelled and refurbished to mint condition, offer every modern convenience and comfort. In the en-suite bathrooms, original fittings combine with the modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs.
The spacious cabins offer passengers the opportunity to travel in privacy, comfort and luxury, with fittings and facilities that are of the highest standard. All are equipped with a writing surface and a personal safe for valuables. There is also a bar fridge filled with beverages of the passengers’ choice and room service is available 24 hours a day.

07h00 - Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10h00. The train travels through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. What our customers say
We travelled to Africa as our once in a lifetime visit to experience a cross section of Southern and Eastern Africa. As a couple travelling with a good friend on single supplement, the three of us were totally impressed with Katelyn's ability to ensure that our requested 'in country' travel itinerary was arranged perfectly. We booked our own international flights before we chose Bench Africa to complete the 'in country itinerary'. Our trip involved a mix of various tours and independent requests/arrangements all booked through Bench Africa. All of these worked perfectly, with the accommodation, meals and transport (land and air) very well coordinated by Katelyn such that there were no problems with this relatively complicated itinerary. The standard of accommodation, meals and travel exceeded our expectations. Our 5 weeks included South Africa (rail, road and air), Kenya / Tanzania (12 day Safari), Zambia/ Zimbabwe and Botswana (land and air). Whilst we paid more than what we initially thought, Katelyn expanded our horizons on what was possible with the result that we achieved more than that we wanted to achieve for this adventure. This journey was faultless, value for money and a credit to Katelyn and Bench Africa. We highly recommend Bench Africa.

Fantastic experience from the booking all the way through to returning home!

Great experience with this Company. They looked after my travel plans and being a world traveller I would count this as one of my best travel experiences. The sarfari at the Black Rinho Lodge was just the amount of animal contact I wanted. The Rovos train from Pretoria to Cape Town was out of this world . While the accommodation I had in Cape Town was excellent. Karen McKilliam, the agent at Bench Africa locked into what I wanted to experience and her professionalism was excellent. Ask for Karen as she is outstanding in communicating and her travel plans for me was spot on. No worries in the whole of my trip. Would love to travel with this Company again

I headed ott to travel via the Rovos train from Pretoria to Cape Town. A remarkable trip in itself but further enhanced with the help of Karin from Bench Africa. Karen organised all my internal travel by car and train within South Africa. When the schedule said car pick up , there was a car to pick me up. My ten day trip entailed a safari and train trip. All went so smoothly that as a world traveler I would consider this adventure as one of the best I've experienced. I organised my flights with frequent flyer points but everything else was done by Karen from Bench Africa Would recommend this company without hesitation. John
