Kenya introduces mandatory inbound travel insurance from 05 October 2026

Kenya introduces mandatory inbound travel health insurance

Kenya’s new insurance requirement: what travellers need to know

Kenya has introduced mandatory inbound travel health insurance from 5 October 2026. The requirement generally applies to overseas visitors staying for less than three months, subject to exemptions, and is now part of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) application process.

How do I arrange insurance for my Kenya trip?

If you are applying for a new eTA, follow the insurance prompts at etakenya.go.ke. Insurance can also be purchased separately through the official eCitizen insurance portal.

Have your passport, travel dates and contact details ready. Once payment is complete, check that your policy has been issued for the correct dates. We suggest saving the confirmation on your phone and keeping a printed copy with your travel documents.

Can I use my existing travel insurance instead?

The Kenyan inbound policy is a separate entry requirement. You should also arrange comprehensive travel insurance for your journey, as the mandatory policy has limited cover.

We recommend purchasing comprehensive insurance alongside the compulsory Kenyan cover. When choosing your usual policy, check that it suits your destinations, planned activities and individual circumstances.

How much does Kenya’s inbound insurance cost and what does it cover?

The official portal lists a premium of up to USD 44 per person. Cover lasts for up to three months and permits multiple entries during that period.

Policy benefitLimit
Medical expensesUSD 20,000
Emergency medical transportation and evacuationUSD 25,000
Repatriation of remainsUSD 5,000

The maximum combined benefit is USD 50,000 per person. Conditions, exclusions and individual benefit limits apply, so make sure you familiarise yourself with the policy.

Entry requirements can change. Check the official arrangements when planning your trip and again before departure. If you have already booked with Bench Africa and are unsure which steps apply, please contact your safari specialist.
