Tanzania mandatory inbound travel insurance: what travellers need to know

From 01 October, mandatory inbound travel insurance applies to foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania by air, land or sea.

Zanzibar has had its own mandatory inbound insurance requirement since 01 October 2024. Now, the same requirement applies to travellers entering mainland Tanzania.

Which insurance policy do I need for my Tanzania trip?

For new policies, the correct portal is determined by the traveller’s first point of entry into Tanzania.

If arriving first into Mainland Tanzania, purchase through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC): inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz

If arriving first into Zanzibar, purchase through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC): inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz

For journeys including both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, only one policy is required.

Already purchased a ZIC policy? You are covered for both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, even if your journey begins on the mainland. There is no need to cancel it or buy an additional NIC policy.

Likewise, travellers with a valid NIC policy for mainland Tanzania can use the same policy when continuing on to Zanzibar. In short, once the mandatory policy has been purchased, a second policy is not needed for a journey that includes both.

What do I need to apply for Tanzania travel insurance?

When applying, have your passport number, travel dates, nationality and first point of entry ready. Payment can be made by Visa or Mastercard.

We recommend purchasing the policy online before departure. The certificate is usually issued within minutes of successful payment, so keep both a digital and printed copy with your travel documents. As this is a new requirement, allow a little extra time at the airport, particularly if you have an onward flight or connection. Buying your policy online before you fly and keeping the certificate handy is the simplest way to avoid unnecessary hold-ups.

Can I use my existing travel insurance for Tanzania entry?

No. It’s important to note that this policy is a mandatory government entry requirement, not a replacement for comprehensive travel insurance. Even if you already have private travel or medical cover in place, you must still purchase the relevant Tanzania inbound policy before you arrive. We recommend you consider retaining your usual travel insurance as well, particularly for broader cover and where you are visiting multiple destinations.

How much does Tanzania travel insurance cost and what does it cover?

The policy is valid for up to 92 days, including multiple entries, and covers emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation and loss of luggage.
