Accommodation: 3 nights Kafunta River Lodge
Kafunta River Lodge is located adjacent to the park and has 10 spacious en- suite rooms overlooking the river. Central to the lodge is a spacious bar and dining area. Built around a wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and floodplains. Facilities include a swimming pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the area. The lodge has its own pontoon for an adventurous crossing and access into the more remote areas of the Park for game viewing.
The South Luangwa National Park is world renowned for excellent wildlife sightings. Situated at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia, it is isolated and wild, and is classed as one of the best-known regions in Africa for walking safaris. Divided by the Luangwa River which provides a lifeline to the area, the Park offers an opportunity to discover enormous concentrations of big game – lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, buffalo and plains game – and is a birders paradise with over 450 species recorded, from the elegant crowned cranes and saddle bill storks to hundreds of brightly coloured carmine bee-eaters nesting in the sandy banks of the river. The focus here is mainly on open vehicle safaris, while walking safaris are taken mainly at the sister Island Camp inside the southern sector of the park. Kafunta River Lodge is open 12 months of the year, but only group bookings are taken between January and March.
